A little bit about us

WHO & WHAT

XL Academy is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering non-English-speaking students by teaching them English, math, and other essential subjects. Founded by children who were inspired after meeting peers with limited access to educational opportunities, our mission is to create opportunities and break down language barriers. We believe everyone has inherent potential, and XL Academy is committed to helping students unlock their greatness and share it with the world.

WHY

Many Vietnamese immigrants and Vietnamese people face challenges when learning English, which can affect their education, employment opportunities, access to healthcare, and everyday lives. This is why XL Academy exists: to help bridge language barriers and make education more accessible. While many people take access to education and language learning for granted, others have fewer opportunities to learn. Through our classes, we teach children English, math, and other essential skills to help them grow and explore new possibilities.

WHEN

XL Academy has begun its teaching journey, starting with educating students in Vietnam. What began as a small initiative has the potential to reach more communities and create opportunities for children around the world. As we continue to grow, we welcome your support in helping us expand our educational efforts and reach more students in need.

HOW

XL Academy welcomes donations and other contributions that help us provide educational opportunities for children in Vietnam. Your support helps us obtain the resources needed to teach English, math, and other essential subjects. With your help, we can continue providing educational opportunities and resources to children in Vietnam, giving more students the chance to learn, grow, and build a brighter future.

Meet Our Teachers

Adrian D

I'm currently a freshman at UCLA and my interests include robotics, swimming, and 3D modelling. I'm currently studying Mandarin, and after visiting other countries and seeing how the students there study, I became interested in the possibility of teaching and/or helping students learn languages.

Isabella D

I am Isabella Doan, a founding board member of XL Academy, where I serve as Communications Officer and Secretary. I lead organizational communications and support our mission of teaching English and other essential subjects to students in Vietnam. My work is focused on making education more accessible and helping students overcome language barriers.

Elizabeth W

My name is Elizabeth and I am fourteen years old. At XL Academy, I am a secretary in charge of note-taking and task organization. Our nonprofit is one way I pursue my purpose to provide service and educational assistance to others, and I am lucky enough to do it with my family. I became part of XL Academy in 2024, and across my experience of accompanying our students as they develop their skills, I have learned just as much as they have, from teaching methods to the beauty of quiet human connection beyond words, nationality, and situation. My hope for XL Academy is to give strength to everyone in reach of our mission, and allow them both the opportunity and the courage to exercise their fullest potential, as we hope for our students with every lesson.

Hunter D

Hi my name is Hunter Doan, I am 15 years old and I am a teacher for XL Academy. I was born in San Francisco, and was raised in the East Bay for most of my life. I am currently a freshman in high school, and I am also the class president for my class. I enjoy drawing, making and listening to music, and playing guitar. I decided to join XL Academy because I saw it as an outlet to help people in need, and also a way to put some good in this world.

Theo L N

I am Theo Le, a 13-year-old Vietnamese American boy living in California, and I want to help bridge the language gap for young Vietnamese students at XL Academy. Some of my hobbies include taekwondo, coding, and reading, which will help teach young students learning English and other subjects to accomplish their goals and excite them to learn new things. My part in XL academy will hopefully strengthen bonds with younger students and inspire students to become a better self.

Yen Thi GA

I’m a 7th-grade student and a member of XL Academy who is passionate about helping kids and making a positive difference. I’ve been practicing Taekwondo since I was 2 years old, and sports are a big part of my life. I also enjoy learning languages. I speak fluent Spanish and am currently learning Russian and German. My goal with XL Academy is to help as many kids as possible by supporting them, and creating opportunities.

Our Agenda

Ideation and Logistics

XL Academy will focus on creating courses for students in Southeast Asia. We'll research their specific linguistic and cultural needs and collaborate with local educators to design an engaging curriculum. To facilitate enrollment, we'll partner with schools and community organizations and develop an accessible online registration system. By addressing the unique needs of Southeast Asian students and ensuring a smooth enrollment process, XL Academy aims to positively impact their educational journey.

Launch

The next challenge for XL Academy is securing funding through donations to bootstrap our mission. We'll launch a fundraising campaign, reaching out to individuals, businesses, and philanthropic organizations. Our strategy includes creating marketing materials, leveraging social media, and hosting events to raise awareness and support. By building a donor network, we aim to secure the financial resources needed to develop programs, recruit educators, and expand our reach, ultimately providing high-quality education to international students.
